Here’s what’s up:
Saturday, August 21
John Byrne performs solo at Paddy Whacks Pub, Welsh Road, starting at 3 p.m. Paddy Whacks is at 9241-43 Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philly, tucked into a little shopping center at the corner of the Boulevard and Welsh.
The multi-talented and well-traveled Sean Fleming brings his act to The Dubliner on the Delaware, 34 North Main Street in New Hope, starting at 7 p.m. As we suggest, Sean, who hails from Killarney, seems to have been everywhere, from the Robin Hood Dell to, oh, say, Carnegie Hall. Promises to be a great show.
Coming Up
Ken McBride, Himself, will perform at the MacSwiney Club, 510 Greenwood Avenue in Jenkintown, starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 11.
On September 9, 10 and 11, the Philadelphia Ceili Group hosts its wonderful annual festival of Irish music, dance and culture, with a Saturday night show by the famed supergroup Lúnasa, at the Commodore John Barry Arts and Cultural Center (the Irish Center), 6815 Emlen Street in Mount Airy. And once more, a reminder, masks are now required for visitors and employees to the Irish Center in accordance with Philadelphia guidelines, unless you’re seated at table or at the bar.
On Friday, September 10, Ireland will face off against Peru in a Unity Cup soccer game, beginning at 8 p.m., at Smith Playground. The Irish will be back, this time against the team from Wales, on Friday, September 17, at 6 p.m. Smith Playground is at 2100 South 24th Street in South Philly. Full details of the tournament here.
And Friday, September 24, through Sunday, September 26, it’s the Fall Irish Festival in North Wildwood. Details here.
Friday, October 8, it’s Irish Idol, at Hanrahan’s Irish Pub, 690 Burmont Road, Drexel Hill! Pick your favorite Irish tune and sing it, and you might win a fabulous prize. Simon Cowell will not be there. The fun starts at 7 p.m. Contact Michael Concannon at irish2hours@gmail.com to enter.
