It’s that time again! Time to get the skinny on all the Irish doings in and around Philly and the Shore.
Here we go.
Saturday, August 14
The great singer-raconteur and County Tyrone native son Gerry Timlin will perform at Dubliner on the Delaware, 34 North Main Street in New Hope, beginning at 7 p.m. A terrific venue, and anyone who has seen Gerry on stage knows it’s a guaranteed good time.
Also Saturday, starting at 9 p.m., Jamison Celtic Rock holds forth at a deck party at Avalon Yacht Club, 704 7th Street, Avalon, N.J.
Wednesday, August 18
If you’ve never heard a carillon—musical bells echoing across the landscape from high atop a church tower—here’s your opportunity, especially since Irish Thunder Pipes & Drums will be on hand to play a wide selection of their tunes as well. The event takes place starting at 7:30 p.m. at Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge Park. The Thunder played recently at the carillon concert at St. Thomas Church in Whitemarsh, and they put on quite a show. Go.
Looking a Bit Out There
On September 9, 10 and 11, the Philadelphia Ceili Group hosts its annual festival of Irish music, , dance and culture, culminating in a concert by Lúnasa, at the Commodore John Barry Arts and Cultural Center (the Irish Center), 6815 Emlen Street in Mount Airy. Tickets and info here.
And just a reminder, should you have plans at any point to drop by the Irish Center—for the festival or anything else—masks are now required for visitors and employees in accordance with Philadelphia guidelines, unless you’re seated at table or at the bar.
Friday, September 10, Ireland will face off against Peru in a Unity Cup soccer game, beginning at 8 p.m., at Smith Playground. The Irish will be back, this time against the team from Wales, on Friday, September 17, at 6 p.m. You’ll find Smith Playground at 2100 South 24th Street in South Philly. Ken McBride Himself, longtime entertainer throughout the Delaware Valley and the Shore, will be doing just that—entertaining—at the MacSwiney Club, 510 Greenwood Avenue in Jenkintown on Saturday, September 11. The fun begins at 3 p.m.
And Friday, September 24, through Sunday, September 26, it’s the Fall Irish Festival in North Wildwood. Good to have that back. Details here. It’s the largest Irish festival on the East Coast. Music, vendors, food, drink, T-shirts of questionable taste—it’s all there.
