How to Be Irish in Philly

How to Be Irish in Philly This Week

Get ready for the weekend. We have all the upcoming fun listed out for you.

As before, there are more opportunities to hear live Irish tunes. But more than that … we’re starting a monthlong celebration of James Joyce’s “Ulysses.”

Here’s what’s happening.

Friday, June 4

Celebrate an extended happy hour with Round Tower at Hanrahan’s Irish Pub, 690 Burmont Road in Upper Darby, starting at 6 p.m.

Down the shore, Wee Neil Mac Thiarnáin and Moira will be playing tunes at the Anglesea Pub, 116 West 1stAvenue in North Wildwood, from 6 to 10 p.m. Drop by if you’re lucky enough to be at the beach.

Saturday, June 5

Dan Kaplowitz and John Byrne headline dinner and a show at 118 North, 118 North Wayne Avenue in Wayne. Reservations recommended for indoor dining. (Reserve here.) The show starts at 6 p.m.

From 8 to 11 p.m., it’s singer-guitarist Seamus Kelleher at Con Murphy’s, 1700 Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Center City Philadelphia.

Sunday, June 6

The Shantys have a gig at The Fainting Goat, 105 South MacDade Boulevard in Glenolden, Delco, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Coming Soon …

The Rosenbach, 2008-2010 Delancey Place in Philly, usually observes Bloomsday (June 16) with a reading of James Joyce’s acclaimed “Ulysses.” Not happening this year, but many other virtual and in-person events are planned for the month, including (on Bloomsday itself) a screening of “I Said Yes: A Celebration of Bloomsday at The Rosenbach.” We’re going to have more to say about that soon. In the meantime, here are the month’s Bloomsday 2021 Bloomsday Festival events at The Rosenbach.

Looking Way Ahead …

It’s months away, sure, but if you hadn’t heard it already, the Celtic Classic is back—September 24-26 in historic Bethlehem. Last year was canceled for the obvious reason, but it’s good to see them making a comeback. All the details here.

That’s it for now.See you next time.
