St. Patrick’s Day 2014 at Brittingham’s

One of the area’s best known and beloved Irish pubs underwent a facelift last year. We wanted to experience St. Patrick’s Day in the Lafayette Hill eatery’s light and airy new digs.

The day started with a great buffet. The hash was the best we’d ever tasted.

Things got off to a slow start, but business picked up pretty quickly–not long after local singer-raconteur Oliver McElhone started to sing rebel songs, and whatever else anybody wanted to hear, from a stage not far from one of Brittingham’s two bars.

And both bars were pretty busy when we left.

St. Patrick’s Day at Brittingham’s attracted a pretty diverse crowd, including two guys from a band called Down By the Glenside who had played there the night before, and two off-duty nurses who had just come off the night shift. “It’s our happy hour,” they said.

Early or late, it was a pretty happy hour for everybody.

We snagged a few photos. Check them out, up top.

And one video of McElhone himself, singing … of course … a rebel tune. Feel free to sing along. We did.

Brittingham’s Irish Festival 2011

The weather has been unpredictable and, at times, near catastrophic lately, but the sun shone brightly on Brittingham’s 2011 Irish Festival. And with all that sun, fans of Irish music, dance, food and merch made plenty of hay. Figuratively speaking.

Jamison is always a big hit with fans, but on this one gorgeous day on a big lot behind the Lafayette Hills pub they brought festival-goers to their feet. After all the rainy days, maybe we all just needed an afternoon of dancing.

And speaking of dancers, the kids of Celtic Flame performed frequently throughout the afternoon. A big hit, as always.

Later in the day, we caught former Blackthorn guitarist Seamus Kelleher’s act. He’s every bit as much fun as a solo.

2nd Annual Brittingham’s Irish Festival

It would have been hard to find a better day for this popular little event at Brittingham’s in Lafayette Hill.

Bright and sunny, but not too hot, and breezy. Bands and dancers all afternoon, Hot dogs and burgers hot off the grill … and cold beer to wash it all down. It’s always hard to see summer ending … but if it has to end, this is the way to do it.

The main attraction was the music: Paddy’s Well, Jamison, Oliver McElhone, all taking turns on the stage, with the Coyle Dancers performing in between sets. It was bright and warm enough for pale-skinned Celts to do a slow burn, but the promoters made sure there was a big tent, and plenty of room underneath.

Several vendors also seemed to attract their fair share of attention throughout the afternoon—as did Yo-Yo Man (“Tim,” for short), who had no shortage of kids buying his toy.

We have photos and lots of videos.
