A wee bit of a light week as we welcome the flowers of May.
The 35th anniversary of the death of Irish Hunger Striker Bobby Sands will be commemorated on Thursday at Tir na nOg , 1324 Hamilton Avenue in Trenton. No details on what’s going to be happening, but it starts at 8 PM. There’s sure to be music.
Also on Thursday, the duo, Slainte, will be playing at Con Murphy’s Pub on the Parkway in Philadelphia.
The John Byrne Band will be performing in concert on Friday at the parish house at Christ Church Riverton in Riverton, NJ.
Also on Friday, head to the Philadelphia Irish Center for Designer Bag Bingo. Walk away with a beautiful handbag and help support the center.
On Saturday, May 7, starting at 4:15 AM, walkers and runners will gather behind the Philadelphia Art Museum for the first Pieta House 5K. Billed as the “darkness into light” event, it raises money for this Irish organization that provides free help to those who are considering suicide or self-harm. The first North American Pieta House opened last year in New York.
Also on Saturday, enjoy a full day of hurling free at the 6th annual Easter Regional Hurling Tournament, sponsored by the Allentown Hibernians hurling club, at Cedar Creek Parkway East in Allentown. Seven teams from the Eastern US will be there to battle it out for the Alexander Campbell cup. Get your tickets and more information at the Hibernians’ website.
Next Sunday is Mother’s Day, US-style, and the Tyrone Society is sponsoring a Mother’s Day Dinner at the Irish Center. There will be dinner, music, and games for kids following Mass at 1 PM.
