Saturday, July 24
It’s a full day of Gaelic athletics at the Philadelphia Gaelic Athletic Association’s field, up in the shadow of the Limerick cooling towers. (For GPS purposes, the address is 945 Longview Road, Pottstown.) The day starts with hurling at 10:30 a.m., followed by ladies’ football, developmental football and men’s games from 1:30 p.m. onward. $10 to get in.
Down the shore, Jamison Celtic Rock brings some of the Christmas spirit to Wildwood Crest’s Christmas in July Celebration, at Sunset Lake along New Jersey Avenue from Farragut to Miami Avenues. That particular gig runs from 6 to 8:45 p.m. Details of the event here.
Sunday, July 25
If you missed them last week at the Allen’s Lane train station (and even if you didn’t), catch Maggie’s Boots in concert at Rigby Mansion, 523 East Church Lane in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. The talented trio of fiddler Hollis Payer, accordion player Rob Curto and cellist Melissa Brun starts up at 1 p.m., with a traditional Irish music session to follow. $12 suggested donation.
Wednesday, July 28
If you’d like to learn how to be more involved in your Philly Irish community, you might give some thought to attending a volunteer open house sponsored by the Irish Diaspora Center, 1001 Darby Road in Havertown, starting at 7 p.m. There are plenty of ways for you to make a great community even better. Looking Wayyyyyyy Ahead
We’re telling you about this event now so you can make plans and order tickets. The Philadelphia Ceili Group’s Annual Irish Music and Dance Festival returns to the Commodore John Barry Arts and Cultural Center (The Irish Center) September 9, 10 and 11. (YAYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!)
Thursday the 9th is Singers Night. Friday the 10th is a ceili/set dance with workshops. All of that great stuff is leading up to a rambling house and the big festival concert finale featuring one of the top bands in Irish music—Lúnasa—on Saturday the 11th. You’ll find the Irish Center at 6815 Emlen Street in Mount Airy, catty corner from the Carpenter Lane train station.
