Several ways to celebrate your heritage this week, from live Irish tunes to an event honoring the literature of Irish author James Joyce.
But we begin with a bittersweet remembrance.
Friday, June 18
Philadelphia-area Gaelic athletes will be honoring the memory of one of their own tonight as the Young Irelands play the Kevin Barrys at the Philly Gaelic Athletic Association field, 485 Longview Road in Limerick.
Sean Hughes, 27, who recently passed away after being hospitalized several months ago for injuries sustained in a job site accident, was a native of County Armagh, a beloved member of the Young Irelands Gaelic Football Club and a former member of the Kevin Barrys. He leaves behind wife Emily O’Neill and young son Sean-Paul.
The game starts at 6 p.m.
Services for Sean Hughes are Saturday, June 19. Details here.
Please keep Sean, his family and his extended GAA family in your prayers.
Saturday, July 19
Seamus Kelleher brings his guitar and his voice to the Red Stag in Bethlehem, starting at 9 p.m. The Red Stag is at 534 Main Street.
Sunday, June 20
Singer-guitarist David Falcone takes the stage at The Dubliner on the Delaware, 34 North Main Street in New Hope. The show starts at 2 p.m.
Starting at 4, it’s Seamus Kelleher again, this time at Ashburner Inn, 8400 Torresdale Avenue in the Northeast.
Jamison Celtic Rock is going all-acoustic at North Shore Bar & Kitchen, 301-303 New York Avenue in North Wildwood, starting at 6 p.m. Bring your musical requests.
Thursday, June 24
Bloomsday isn’t over yet at The Rosenbach. Philadelphia’s celebrated museum and library presents a new program, “Love’s Old Sweet Song: The Music of James Joyce,” a Virtual Behind the Bookcase Tour, from 6 to 7 p.m. It’s free and will be presented via Zoom. The event packages live Celtic harp performances of songs likely Joyce knew all too well, together with discussions of important Joyce texts, all presented alongside iconic artifacts from The Rosenbach’s famed Joyce collection. Register here.
That’s all for this week. See you the next time around.
