There are some more opportunities to hear live Irish music this weekend. In this time, it’s more important than ever to support our local musicians. You’ll also have an opportunity to help commemorate Bloody Sunday.
Here’s what’s up:
Friday, February 26
Irish Mike Jordan will perform at Henry James Saloon from 6 to 9 p.m. You’ll find the saloon at 577 Jamestown Avenue in Philadelphia.
Saturday, February 27
Frank Daly, of Jamison Celtic Rock, will be at the Mifflin Tavern, 1843 South 2nd Street, Philadelphia, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.
Visual artist and community organizer Jacques-Jean “JJ” Tiziou hosts an online concert featuring a wide array of artists, including Karen Ashbrook and Paul Oorts. Karen will perform some superb of her Irish music. Details and tickets here. The show starts at 7 p.m.
Sunday, February 28
Singer-songwriter Jimmy Farrell will be performing an acoustic set at McCarthy’s Red Stag Pub and Whiskey Bar (how can you go wrong?), 534 Main Street in downtown Bethlehem, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
And it’s Frank Daly again, this time with John O’Callahan, playing for the Tucci benefit at Rockledge Pub, 7 Huntingdon Pike in Jenkintown, starting at 3 p.m..
The Commodore John Barry Arts & Cultural Center (the Irish Center) plays host to the annual Bloody Sunday Mass, commemorating the January 30, 1972, Bogside Massacre in which 14 innocent people died, shot by British soldiers. The mass originally was scheduled for January 31. It starts at 3 p.m. The mass will be live streamed. Lizzie Hagerty Leitner will be the cantor, accompanied by Seamus McGroary. The Irish Center is at 6815 Emlen Street in the Mount Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia.
Once again, we want to remind you to keep tabs on our Facebook page. As usual, Facebook live concerts pop up all the time, featuring some of our best local artists. But more to the point, we’re days away from March—St. Patrick’s month. A lot of events have been canceled this year because of the pandemic, but many are still scheduled. Those events are just starting to show up on our Facebook page. You’d be well advised to join, if you’re not already a member.
