How to Be Irish in Philly

How to Be Irish in Philly This Week

Lots of music this week, including an excellent opportunity to hear it in person.

In these tough times, it’s critical that we do what we can to support musicians and keep the tunes alive.

Here’s the deal:

Friday, January 29

Raymond Coleman is back with a live show at New Deck Tavern, 3408 Sansom Street in Philly’s University City neighborhood, starting at 6 p.m. The tavern promises heaters, blankies and hot spiked drinks under a tent to keep you toasty. Of course, there’s also Ray’s warm personality, too.

If you’re online, Cork ballad singer Elle Marie O’Dwyer hosts a show, live on the Irish Singing Sessions Facebook page, starting at 8 p.m.

Saturday, January 30

The fabulous Screaming Orphans live-stream a concert consisting of Angela’s picks, starting at 5 p.m., on Facebook. Check it out here. Tips gratefully accepted.

Sunday, January 31

Also streaming is a concert by Celtic Fiddle Festival—that’s Kevin Burke (Ireland), Christian Lemaître (Brittany, France) and Charlie McKerron (Scotland)—with special guest Québécois fiddler and former band member, Andre Brunet. Catch it starting at 4 p.m. at Youtube.com/tunesupply. You can watch it for free, but donations are accepted, of course. Contribute here.

The Shantys take the stage at Gaul & Company Malthouse, 704 Huntingdon Pike in Rockledge, starting at 3 p.m.

Monday, February 1

Flutist and tin whistle whiz Joanie Madden and fiddler Eileen Ivers host a Celebration of St. Brigid, live on Facebook, starting at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. It’ll be streamed live by the Association of Irish & Celtic Festivals, co-sponsored by the Irish Embassy. On the bill: Cherish the Ladies, The Friel Sisters, Ashley Davis, Karan Casey, Cassie and Maggie, Emma Langford—and Eileen and Joanie, of course. All details here

Tuesday, February 2

The Irish Diaspora Center hosts a special presentation, “How to Select a Health Care Agent,” from 7 to 8 p.m. To be clear, a health care agent helps make health care decisions for you if you have a medical condition that may render you unable to make those decisions on your own. Leading the presentation is attorney Robert R. DeLong, Jr. He specializes in estate planning, administration and elder law. To register, email at alanna@icphila.org.

And that’s it for this week.

Just a reminder that we have a fab Facebook page, which you’re welcome to join. And it would be a good thing, too. Lots of streamed concerts pop up there at short notice, and you don’t want to miss out.In the meantime, please stay safe and we’ll see you next time.
