A bit of a lull in the proceedings this week, but you definitely need to check out the following:
Saturday, October 19
Here’s how to have fun and support a couple of good causes. It’s the first ever Casino Night sponsored by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, to be held in a beautiful refurbished barn in Malvern.
The event starts at 6:30 p.m., featuring live music by Raymond McGroary, open bar with beer, wine and soft drinks, hors d’oeuvres and desserts, an outdoor cigar bar—and of course, a stack of chips to get you started off in a beginner-friendly game of blackjack, poker or craps.
Proceeds benefit the Duffy’s Cut Project and the Friendly Sons Immaculata Scholarship Endowment.
Friday, October 25
The Win Horan Trio will perform in concert at the Philadelphia Irish Center, 6815 Emlen Street in Philly’s Mount Airy neighborhood. Best-known as the fiddler for Solas, Win will be joined by pianist Utsav Lal and guitarist Dan Faiella. The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets here.
Winifred Horan is one of the top fiddlers in the business, and she’ll be performing tunes from her new CD, “The Memory of Magic.” (We have an interview here.)
Tickets are $15 for members of the Philadelphia Ceili Group, which sponsors the concert. It’s $20 for members of the general public. Tickets at the door will run you $25.

Sunday, October 27
Do you like Irish tunes? Do you like pancakes? Fiddler Hollis Payer and accordionist Rob Curto of Maggie’s Boots will sweeten your breakfast by leading a pancake session—what a brilliant idea!—at South Philly Wolf Den, in the middle of the 2200 block of South Chadwick Street, between Wolf and Jackson. All you can eat and all you can listen to (and play along with, if you play Irish tunes). Runs from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
On the same day, starting at 5 p.m., 2019 Philadelphia Gaelic Athletic Association All-Stars will face off against New York GAA and Ulster University Jordanstown in football and hurling at St. Joseph’s University’s Sweeney Field, 5600 City Avenue. A terrific night of GAA sports under the lights. Best of all, admission is free.
