There’s plenty to keep you Irish peeps busy this week.
Let’s start with Saturday night. You’ll have an opportunity to hear two great local bands:
- The first event is Irish night at Cannstatter Volksfest Verein, 9130 Academy Road in Northeast Philly. The biergarten opens at 5 p.m., and The Shanties take the stage at 7:30. Free admission!
- If you’re down the shore, take in the Bogside Rogues at Anglesea Pub, 116 West 1stAvenue in North Wildwood. The show starts at 9.
On Sunday, another truly fun-packed event, with an opportunity to help well-known local Irish musician Luke Jardel. Luke suffered a severe injury to his hand and required major surgery.
There’s a benefit in his honor at Lost Legion Post 497, 8035 Jenkintown Road in Elkins Park. You’ll see many of your favorite bands, playing all day, starting at 2 p.m. (It’s a veritable who’s who: Billy McGovern, Seamus McGroary, A.J. Slick, Bill Whitman, Bill Lawson, Marty Ahern, Matt McDonald, The Shanties, Members of The Apostles of Soul, Jamison and the Bogside Rogues.)
The music will be in the picnic grove. Sunday looks like a sunny day for it. And take a chance on wheelbarrow of cheer tickets. Everything is for a great cause.
Tickets are on sale via Eventbrite. Your 40-buck donation includes food, draft beer and—of course—terrific tunes.
Also on Sunday: Our Lady of Knock Mass at the Irish Center, 6815 Emlen Street in Mount Airy. It’s sponsored by the Mayo Association of Philadelphia. Doors open at 2 p.m., with Mass beginning at 2:30. After Mass, there’s a buffet dinner for $25 a person. Main course options include stuffed pork or salmon with lemon and dill butter.

Next Saturday night, the John Byrne Band presents the music of Shane MacGowan and The Pogues at Kildare’s Irish Pub, starting at 6 p.m. It promises to be a great night.
