Welcome to the unofficial end of summer. (Cue the copious weeping.)
Fear not, there’s much to keep you occupied as we enter the Labor Day weekend and beyond.
Here’s how things shake out:
Sunday, September 1
If you’ve never been to Brittingham’s annual Irish festival, we’ve been there, and we recommend it. The weather is supposed to be picture perfect and you’ll find plenty to occupy your time in an Irish-y sort of way.
You’ll get to hear tunes from the Paul Moore Band and the Flip-N-Mickeys, plus there will be food and drink specials, raffles and giveaways. Proceeds of the event benefit St. Baldrick’s Foundation for childhood cancer research. In other words, a good time for a very good cause.
You’ll find Brittingham’s at 640 Germantown Pike in Lafayette Hill (right at the curve, across from the Barren Hill Fire Company). It starts at 11:30 a.m. and runs for hours and hours.
Monday, September 2
Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones roll into town for a show at the Plough & Stars (one of our favorite venues), 123 Chestnut Street in Old City. It all starts at 7 p.m.
(If you didn’t catch our podcast with Derek, check it out here. And listen to all of our podcasts here on iTunes. There are a lot of them.)
Thursday, September 5
What happens next with Brexit? What are the ramifications? How will it affect Ireland? It’s anybody’s guess at this point, but if there is one person who has expert insights, it’s Brendan O’Leary, an Irish, European Union, and U.S. citizen, and since 2003 has been the Lauder Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania.
You can hear what he has to say at The Rosenbach, 2008-2010 Delancey Place in Philadelphia.
The event starts at 6 p.m. Register here.
Friday, September 6
You remember Celtic Thunder, don’t you? (Just kidding. Who doesn’t?)
If you love Celtic Thunder, it’s very likely you have a fond place in your heart for Colm Keegan, formerly one of the principal singers in that world-class ensemble.
Here’s your chance to hear him up close and personal in a house concert at 602 Paddock Road, Southampton, Bucks County.
Yet one more reminder that the big 2019 Philadelphia Ceili Group Festival is coming up September 12-14. All the details here.
See you next week.
