Two area Gaelic athletic clubs are sponsoring fund-raisers this week, and of course New Year’s Eve is right around the corner, so you’ll have an opportunity to put on your party hat and celebrate.
Here’s what’s on.
Glenside Gaelic Club hosts its annual Adult Winter Holiday Party Saturday from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m, at Jerzee’s Sports Bar & Pizzeria, 2609 Mount Carmel Avenue in Glenside. Friends of the club are invited to join in the fun, which includes drink specials. Jerzee’s will donate a portion of the night’s profits to the club. There will be a 50/50 and baskets of cheer and beer raffles. All donations cheerfully accepted. Music by Raymond McGroary.
Also that night (at the same time), the John Byrne Band presents the music of Shane MacGowan and the Pogues at The Locks at Sona, 4417 Main Street in Philadelphia’s Manayunk neighborhood. Shane was born Christmas Day in 1957, so consider this his 61st birthday party.
Monday, December 31, you can celebrate New Year’s Eve Irish-style at the Commodore John Barry Arts and Cultural Center (or just plain “The Irish Center”). The party starts at 8 p.m. and lasts till 1 a.m. January 1. For your 40 bucks, you get music by Vince Gallagher and dancing by John Shields. There will be a light buffet and a champagne toast come midnight. Get your reservations now. Please RSVP by contacting Sean McMenamin at (215) 850-0518; Mary Curran at (610) 213-9911 or chuckyrla@comcast.net; or the Irish Center at (215) 843-8051 or management@theirishcenter.org. Do it ASAP. The center needs to nail down how much food to prepare.
Tuesday night, the 1st, Notre Dames Gaelic Football Club sponsors a bowling night at MacDade Bowl, 2105 MacDade Boulevard, in Holmes, Delaware County. $20 includes shoe rental, and all ages are welcome. It’s BYOB—beer and wine only. You’ll have some chances to win some fab NDGFC gear. The bowler with the highest score on the night will win a prize. Join the crowd afterward across the street at Barnaby’s Ridley.
On Saturday the 5th join the Delco Gaels Night at the Races, J.D. McGillicuddy’s, 8919 West Chester Pike, in Upper Darby. The fun kicks off at 7 p.m. and lasts till 11 p.m. It costs $30 to gain admission. Horse sponsor $20, race sponsor $50. For tickets or sponsorships, contact Louie Bradley 610-633-0313; Lorna Corr 610-322-2787; John McDaid 267-226-8581; Richard Coyle 484-576-7700; or Jim McCormick 484-433-1472. Proceeds benefit the Gaels’ girls and boys 2019 Feile teams.
That’s it for this week. Get out there and be Irish!
