How to Be Irish in Philly

How To Be Irish in Philly This Week

Don’t let a little chance of rain spook you. Hey, what does Hurricane Schwartz know? Tomorrow is a great day to head out to Cherokee Day Camp and Festival Grounds in Bensalem for the Philadelphia Fleadh. There’s fabulous music on five stages from Jamison, No Irish Need Apply, The John Byrne Band, the Bogside Rogues, the Shantys, the Paul Moore Band, the Kilmaine Saints and more. There’s a feis open to all dance schools, a ceili sponsored by Comhaltas, and loads of kids’ activities and kids under 12 get in free! It’s a great family outing.

The group Glengesh is at the Dubliner on the Delaware on Saturday night. They were asked to sing the National Anthem at Irish Heritage Night at the Phillies a couple of weeks ago.

On Sunday, enjoy some beef and beer to help raise money for the Mary from Dungloe organization. Meet the 2016 Philly Mary from Dungloe, Ciara Travers, and enjoy some great deli sandwiches, watch the Irish dancers, and bid on raffle prizes. It’s happening at The Irish Center in Mt. Airy.

We had Irish Heritage Night at the Phillies, Irish Heritage Night at the Union, and this week, Irish Heritage Night at Coca Cola Ballpark in Allentown where on Tuesday, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs meet the Syracuse Chiefs.

On Thursday, catch Slainte at Kildare’s West Chester.

On Friday, get a dose of little known Pennsylvania Irish history as the Settlement Music School hosts “Victory at Arnot,” a musical about Mother Jones, an Irish immigrant who worked as a labor organizer in the state’s coal region. The performers are star quality:

Composer Eleanor Aversa has won national awards including the Northridge Composition Prize and a MacDowell Fellowship, as well as awards and grants from ASCAP, the Queens Council on the Arts, and the American Composers Forum. Her work has been performed in 20 cities in the United States and abroad.

Professional storyteller Megan Hicks has performed throughout the United States and has given international programs on three continents. Her storytelling awards and honors include Parents’ Choice, Storytellers World, The Audies, NAPPA, Parents’ Guide to Children’s Media, and National Storyteller of the Year.

Michele Kelly is the flutist and co-Artistic Director of Relâche, a new music chamber group specializing in music “neither classical, nor popular, but somewhere in between.” Relâche has performed around the country and the globe, including residency, festival and touring appearances in South America, Japan and Eastern and Western Europe. Ms. Kelly appears on the group’s last five recordings, as well on Centaur Records.

Violinist Andreia Torain has performed with numerous groups including the Fairmount Chamber Ensemble, Philadelphia Classical Symphony, Delaware Symphony, Delaware Valley Philharmonic, Newtown Chamber Orchestra, and the Riverside Symphonia. She is a founding member of the Philalea Trio.

Admission is only $10.00.

Also on Friday, Jamison will be at Parx 360 in Bensalem (and on Saturday, at Mayfair’s May Fair at Frankford and Cottman Avenue in Philly).
