How to Be Irish in Philly This Week

Weatherwise it may feel like spring, but you’ll still get into the Christmas spirit this week in Irish Philadelphia.

This Sunday, musicians Gabriel Donohue and Cathy Maguire will arrive via horse carriage at the Dubliner on the Delaware in New Hope for an afternoon and evening of Christmas and other music. The show benefits Fisherman’s Mark, a Lambertville, NJ, nonprofit serving the local community.

On Wednesday, Cherish the Ladies, along with singer Don Stiffe, will be performing some of the songs and tunes from their new album, “Christmas in Ireland,” at The Grand Opera House, 818 N. Market Street in Wilmington, DE.

Then, on Friday, Lunasa brings its Christmas show—and singer Karan Casey—to St. Mary’s Church on the Penn Campus.

Just try to be Grinchy!

Also this week: On Saturday, the Philadelphia Ceili Group is presenting the Philly debut of a one-woman play, “Kitty in the Lane,” which is set in rural Ireland and tells the story of a young woman, waiting for her boyfriend to pick her up to go to a beauty content, which she thinks may be her only way to escape from her tragic yet comic life. The play will be performed at The Irish Center, 6815 Emlen Street, Philadelphia. It stars Aine Ryan, who also wrote the play which garnered rave reviews at the 2015 San Francisco International Arts Festival.

The annual Irish Immigration Center/Irish Center senior Christmas lunch is Monday at the Irish Center. Food is being provided by The Plough and the Stars Restaurant.

The Immigration Center is holding its annual Christmas party at the center, 7 S. Cedar Lane in Upper Darby, on Thursday, starting at 7 PM. It’s usually pretty rollicking. You can purchase your 2016 Immigration Center calendar—the theme is Irish music albums –and have it signed by one or more of the seniors who posed for calendar pages.
